I’ve been formally touring colleges with my daughter, who will be a senior next year. Last weekend, one campus stood out to me—not for its beauty or its volunteers who were so organized, but for a shared belief I heard repeated by people several times: “changing the world one student at a time.”
What made the difference was the culture. Students spoke about being told that they belonged there—especially when they were struggling. The priority wasn’t just performance; it was belonging first.
That mindset showed up everywhere: dedicated support resources (Office of Success), peer-led study sessions, and a clear commitment to lifting up those who needed it most. Students lit up when speaking about overcoming their challenges, and helping freshmen find ways to succeed on campus.
It was a strong reminder that great organizations don’t just state their values—they consistently demonstrate them. Real leadership shows up in how we create energy during challenges, how we sincerely encourage others, and how we ensure people know they belong.
Because when people feel that, they don’t just get through setbacks—they grow into stronger leaders because of them.
